Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought 3rd-level domain names remained operational.

There are no particular terms on who can get a .NAME domain name, but in order to keep the objective behind its establishment alive, the Registry may check who the Registrant is and if there is no link between the owner and the actual domain name, the registration might be challenged.
